In the 4th and the 5th translation, the pragmatics of Google Translate will be tested. We will be looking at the word brother and sister. In English, brother can refer to older brother and younger brother and sister can refer to older and younger sister. However, in Chinese and Korean, it is a different case.
In Chinese, different words are used when referring to older brother(哥哥), younger brother(弟弟), older sister(姐姐), and younger sister(妹妹).
In Korean, when referring to younger siblings, the word "동생" is used, which generally refers to younger siblings. When referring to younger brother, a character "남"which means boy is added before the word the word "동생". When talking about younger sister, the character "여" is added which means girl. However, when calling older siblings, different words are used according to the gender of the speaker. There are 4 ways in calling older siblings in which two for guys and two for girls.
Guys calling their older brother: 형
Guys calling their older sister: 누나
Girls calling their older brother: 오빠
Girls calling their older sister: 언니
